چکیده

A recent report in this journal from these authors, which shows that vermicomposting transforms a toxic weed such as lantana into benign organic fertilizer, can be of practical utility only if processes developed for rapid, inexpensive, and sustainable weeds. This paper describes attempts leading to process the allelopathic weeds (Lantana camara), parthenium (Parthenium hysterophorus), ipomoea (Ipomoea carnea). For it, ‘high-rate vermicomposting’ concept was employed due could used directly each case without need pre-composting or any other form pretreatment. The manure worm Eisenia fetida, had been cultured on cowdung feed habitat, slow adapt weed-feed but survived then began thrive, all three weeds, enabling weeds’ sustained efficient throughout 16 month’s uninterrupted operation vermireactors. In cases extent vermicast production per unit time showed rising trend, indicating rate set rise further with time. found accompany 50 ± 10% loss carbon increase concentration total nitrogen also weed’s additional mineralization. combined effect significant lowering carbon-nitrogen ratio, enrichment major, medium, trace nutrients vermicomposts relative their parent substrates. findings establish sustained, direct, rapid transformation fertilizers even accomplished high-rate paradigm.

Biotechnology for aerobic conversion of food waste into organic fertilizer.

A biotechnology for aerobic conversion of food waste into organic fertilizer under controlled aeration, stirring, pH and temperature at 55-65 degrees C, is proposed. To maintain neutral pH at the beginning of the bioconversion 5% CaCO3 was added to the total solids of the food waste. The addition of 20% horticultural waste compost as a bulking agent to the food wastes (w.w./w.w.), improved the ...

Toxic Weeds and Their Impact on Animals

Agriculturally grown plants are potentially contaminated with poisonous weeds. Many potentially toxic plants are found in pastures and crops. Consequently, forage crops at harvest or when directly grazed may contain toxic amounts of poisonous plants. Unfortunately, efficient prevention of contamination with certain poisonous plants is not always feasible or practical, and thus, contaminated fee...

From green to clean: a promising and sustainable approach to remove toxic metals from contaminated soils

Phytoextraction is an in situ decontamination technique using metal accumulating plants and appropriate soil amendments to transport and concentrate metals from the soil into the aboveground parts of plants, which are harvested with conventional agriculture methods. Since most of the metal hyperaccumulating plants only produce very low biomass, and most of plants producing high biomass accumula...

Rapid screening for bacteria capable of degrading toxic organic compounds

Routine procedures for isolating and characterizing microorganisms capable of degrading toxic chemicals are time consuming and labor intensive. The objective of this paper is to describe a new method for screening aerobic bacterial isolates and consortia that will rapidly determine metabolic capacity for various toxic chemicals and access the use of various substrates as inducers in the degrada...

Detoxification of parthenium (Parthenium hysterophorus) and its metamorphosis into an organic fertilizer and biopesticide

BACKGROUND Vermicompost of the toxic and allelopathic weed parthenium (Parthenium hysterophorus) was explored for its possible use as an organic fertilizer. Replicated plant growth trials were conducted using four levels of parthenium vermicompost (0, 2.5, 3.75, and 5 t/ha) to assess their effects on the germination, growth, and fruition of a typical food plant ladies finger (Abelmoschus escule...
